The Queer Ecologies Project will expand the Alice Austen House education programs to include:0

Garden Care & Planning

The QEP curates the garden for each season with the input of our GSA students and Alice Austen House artists. We maintain the garden with the help of community partners and our growing volunteer base. If you are interested in being in joining the QEP community please fill out our volunteer form.

Sustainable & Alternative Photographic Practices

Develop an environmentally friendly art practice through our workshops sourcing plants from our park and gardens to create photographic images.

Photowalks

The Alice Austen House hosts monthly photowalks, engaging photographers with Staten Island’s extraordinary history and ecology.

Mycology, Composting, and Seed Workshops

Get your hands dirty while exploring the symbiotic relationship between plants and fungi in our mushroom cultivation, seed planting and composting workshops.

Pollinator Education

The native pollinator garden serves as a crucial expansion of the Queer Ecologies Project and the Alice Austen House’s dedication to integrating the garden and park into our core offerings.

Initiatives encompass youth mentorship programs that link to opportunities in green careers, community stewardship efforts, and initiatives aimed at fostering environmental action and awareness.

LGBTQIA+ Historic Landscape Interpretation

The Alice Austen House and surrounding Park are a nationally designated site of LGBTQ+ history. Alice Austen was the founding member of the Staten Island Garden Club and utilized the garden as a safe space for her circle of women friends to gather.

The QEP, surrounding park and museum, celebrate, document and promote understanding of queer history through engaging public programs, exhibitions and workshops year round. Learn more about our upcoming events.
